Kona – World Headquarters of Triathlon

Ironman KonaSince 1981, the lively seaside town of Kailua-Kona on the sun drenched Kona coast of the Big Island of Hawaii has hosted the annual Ironman World Championships.

The race originated on the island of Oahu for the first time in 1978, and combined three of the toughest endurance races in Hawaii: the 2.4-mile Waikiki Roughwater Swim, 112 miles of the Around-Oahu Bike Race, and the 26.2-mile Honolulu Marathon. On February 18th, 1978,  fifteen racers came to Waikiki to take on the first “IRON MAN” challenge.

Since that race, Ironman triathlon has become one of the fastest growing sports in history. Every October 2000+ athletes, their friends and family, hundreds of media personnel and spectators from all around the world flock to Kailua-Kona to take part in this event.
